Ben Mears. Origin: Unknown.

Ben Mears received two land grants on Long Island, both in the Hamiltons area. One grant was for 50 acres and the other for 56.75 acres. While there is much information about the “Sears” family, the only reference we were able to find for anything close to “Mears” was for a very young Richard “Meares,” who was born in Scotland ca 1770, and then lived in the Bahamas, married to a Lightbourne woman. As this man would have been a minor during the period in which most grantees were receiving their land, and we know nothing about his family, we are forced to leave Ben Mears as a man of unknown origin.
